Amalfi Coast, Italy
We just returned from a quick sailing trip along the Amalfi Coast, and I was in architectural heaven! It’s incredible how entire cities were constructed thousands of years ago, and are still lived in the same way in 2016. What amazes me so much is that building technology today is so much more advanced with AutoCAD, cranes, heavy machinery, etc., yet our buildings are so much less aesthetic and crafted.
As we walked through the little streets that wound themselves through the shops and eateries, my favorite part was these artisan doors. The artistic technique is called Intarsia, and is a wood inlay process that is Sorrento’s greatest craft. Each door was beautifully different, and crafted so specially. It really made me want to do something out of the ordinary with my front doors in some of the projects, and not just order something out of a catalogue. So many of the front doors I see here look extremely similar, but it should be a statement, and something unique that is expressive of who lives there; it is the first thing you see when you go to someone’s home! Here are some pictures from the trip…
